Celebrating Insect Week at Piney Lakes Childcare!
At Piney Lakes Childcare, we recently celebrated Insect Week — and what a brilliant time we had! Special themed weeks like this are always a great chance to spark children’s curiosity and deepen their connection with the natural world. Insects are especially fascinating for little ones, and learning about them helps children feel more comfortable and less frightened by these tiny creatures.
Throughout the week, our educators led discussions about different kinds of insects — from ants and bees to butterflies and beetles. The children were keen to share what they already knew and were full of questions about where insects live, what they eat, and why they’re important. It was wonderful to see so much interest and excitement during group times and spontaneous conversations.
We filled the week with hands-on, bug-themed activities. The children created their own colourful insect crafts, explored sensory trays filled with toy insects and natural materials, and even went on mini “insect hunts” around our outdoor space. They loved pretending to be little entomologists, magnifying glasses in hand, searching high and low for any critters they could find!
One of the most rewarding parts of Insect Week was watching how children’s attitudes shifted. A few who were initially unsure or a bit nervous around bugs grew more confident as the week went on. With plenty of play-based learning and gentle encouragement, they began to see insects as helpful and interesting — not scary at all.
At Piney Lakes Childcare, we love celebrating special days and weeks like this. They not only make learning fun but also build important life skills like empathy, curiosity, and respect for nature. Insect Week was a big hit, and we’re already buzzing with ideas for the next adventure!
